In February, AAMI released their updated aseptic processing guidelines. They have adopted the ISO/TC standards and are issuing this new series as a collection at a reduced cost. These ANSI/AAMI 13408 books will also be available for individual purchase. The first section of this new publication deals with the terminal sterilization of medical devices and other items. Alfa Wassermann Separation Technologies initially developed a sanitization and disinfection kit to be used with their pharmaceutical grade ultracentrifuge.  In May 2009, the company reported an important advance. They have determined that this technology can actually be used for the sterilization of a wide variety of other heat sensitive instruments.  Filling machines, filtration systems, laboratory centrifuges, incubators, and laboratory worktops and walls can all be properly cleaned using this system. In May, Portescap announced the launch of a 24 hour rapid turnaround program for prototyping of brushless, slotted DC motors. This new initiative will allow clients to order sample motors in a variety of sizes and gear ratios to test with custom applications. Autoclaveable DC motors are among the devices being offered as standard prototype options. In May, Astell announced the addition of an effluent sterilization system to its product line. These self contained plants are designed to treat contaminated liquid waste. They are sufficiently effective for use at category 3 and 4 labs. Waste water from designated lab areas in such facilities must be sterilized before discharge into the sewer to comply with environmental regulations. The Astell treatment equipment can be structured to handle capacities of up to 5,000 liters per day. The containment tank receives incoming effluent from sinks and bathrooms. It can also be used to handle exhaust and water discharged from instrument sterilizers and autoclaves. (more…)

Claims that ionizing water turns it into a “miracle liquid” with potent powers of disinfection are dubious.   One of the recent versions of this scam blatantly states that the substance cures athletes’ foot and yet it is safe to drink.  Fish and poultry industries use it without adversely affecting the quality of the food. This simple formula can be whipped up on the spot by any cleaning crew with the right ionizing equipment. This sounds like a great product for use in hospitals, sterile manufacturing and lab environments doesn’t it? Actually, there is not a substantial difference between regular tap water and what comes out of these expensive electrolysis machines.  It’s incredible that electrolyzed sterilizing water claims like this can be successfully spread as fact in today’s information age. These latest editions provide comprehensive information regarding processing and standards. Only the first 2 volumes of the 3 volume series have been reissued at this time. Salud de Sol is an ETHOS group sponsored by the University of Dayton and winner of $10,000 in a 2008 business plan competition.  This organization is requesting advice and ideas concerning a few technical problems associated with building a viable solar autoclave.  Their humanitarian project is currently being continued from last year.  The team of engineering students started a non-profit organization with a clear intent to help third world communities improve local healthcare.  Salud de Sol hopes to achieve this by providing a cost effective method for sterilizing medical instruments. Their focus is on Nicaraguan health clinics and communities that are located in areas off-grid or in places where electricity is unreliable or nonexistent. (more…)

Still reeling from an autoclave purchasing scandal last fall, Southeast Asia is now desperately in need of units to treat highly infectious medical waste. The 100 million pesos set aside by the Philippine congress would allow hospitals across the country to safely dispose of these hazardous materials. The National Center for Health Facility Development has already selected locations for the sterilizers. Each medical center equipped with an autoclave would be able to serve several hospitals in its vicinity. While transporting the waste from one location to another offers risks of its own, the funds are simply not sufficient to purchase a unit for every clinic. Heavy duty hazmat bags can be used to reduce the risk of punctures and leaking during transport to the sterilization site. After processing, the materials will be inert and perfectly safe to add to the landfill. This method of disposal is replacing incineration in an effort to cut air pollution. (more…)
